Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, Wellington, New Zealand
Great bush walks and plenty of information about birds and
trees and the history of the area. You see and hear native
birds not now found anywhere else on the mainland of New
Zealand like saddleback and hihi. On a night walk you can
hear kiwi and see glow worms, and star gaze on clear nights.
As well as saving native wildlife, the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary
aims to become a major national and international eco-tourism attraction.
To achieve this, the Sanctuary Trust wants to build a 'gateway' that
includes a visitor centre, shop, restaurant/cafe, and conservation
displays. Also planned are upgrades to tracks and trails and more car parks.
The project is still in the design phase and is likely to occur over
several years. The Trust has asked the Council, the Greater Wellington
Regional Council and the Government for funding. This is a worthwhile
project that the Council would like to support.
Budget
To enable work on this project to begin, the Council granted the
Trust $500,000 in capital spending in 2004/05 to enhance the visitor
experience.
The Council has also approved an $8 million interest-free loan. The
loan is conditional upon the Trust raising other funding for the project
- including Government and private funds.
